Title

Document Analysis and Recognition:  Taking the Pulse of Our Field

Name

Dan Lopresti

Abstract

For an active research community like ours, it is rare but not unheard of to turn attention inward from time-to-time in an attempt to "take the pulse" of the field.  In this short talk, I will briefly survey what a few other disciplines have done in an attempt to help us decide which measures we might want to use when discussing future directions for document analysis and retrieval.

Short Bio

Daniel Lopresti is Professor and Chair of Lehigh's Department of Computer Science and Engineering, as well as Director of the university's Data X Strategic Initiative. He conducts research examining fundamental algorithmic and systems-related questions in pattern recognition, document analysis, and computer security, with recent focuses on performance evaluation and the impact of recognition errors on downstream processing. He has published over 150 papers, and holds 24 U.S. Patents. He previously chaired Technical Committee 11 of the International Association for Pattern Recognition, and currently serves as chair of the IAPR’s Conferences & Meetings Committee. He is co-Editor-in-Chief for the International Journal on Document Analysis and Recognition (Springer), a program co-chair for the 14th International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition (ICDAR 2017) and the 13th International Workshop on Document Analysis Systems (DAS 2018), and publications co-chair for the 24th International Conference on Pattern Recognition (ICPR 2018). He received his Bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College in 1982, and his Ph.D. in computer science from Princeton University in 1987.
