Dear TC11 members,

Welcome to this edition of the IAPR TC11 Newsletter.

I am pleased to introduce myself as the new Communications Officer for TC11. As the new Communications Officer, I hope to continue making this newsletter a valuable resource for our community.

This is the first newsletter after the merger between TC10 and TC11. I would like to express my appreciation to the previous TC10 and TC11 officers and everyone who has contributed to our community over the years. In the coming weeks, we will continue to transition and you will see updates to the website, logo, and more.

In recent news, the deadlines for ICDAR 2027 have been finalized. Make sure you pay attention to the January 31st abstract submission deadline.

Mickaël Coustaty (Chair, TC11)
Momina Moetesum (Vice-Chair, TC11)

We are pleased to announce that IAPR TC10 (Graphics Recognition) and TC11 (Reading Systems) have merged to form a single technical committee: TC11 – Document Analysis and Recognition. This new structure brings together two closely related communities and reflects the growing overlap between their research topics and activities. Over the coming months, the new leadership team will work on unifying our tools, website, and newsletter to provide a single, consistent point of contact for the whole community.

Please stay tuned: further announcements will follow in the months ahead, and we look forward to sharing more details with you soon.

The new TC11 officers are:

  • Mickaël Coustaty - Chair
  • Momina Moetesum - Vice Chair
  • Anna Scius-Bertrand - Educational Officer
  • Brian Kenji Iwana - Communications Officer
  • Sanket Biswas - Dataset Curator
  • Natalia Bottaioli - Webmaster
  • Carlos Moreno-Garcia - Secretary
  • Jordy Van Landeghem - Industrial Officer

The new chair, Mickaël Coustaty, shared a few words with us where he welcomed the new officers, and warmly thanked the outgoing officers of both TC10 and TC11 committees: Andreas Fischer, KC Santosh, Christophe Rigaud, Carlos Moreno, Sanket Biswas, Muzzamil Luqman, Nibal Nayef, Foteini Liwicki, and Joseph Chazalon — for their contributions.

He is looking forward to the new committee’s work spanning graphics recognition, reading systems, and more broadly document analysis and recognition. The TC11 team sees this new chapter as a shared research journey, and is looking forward to welcoming new members who want to help shape the future of Document Analysis and Recognition.

Following the tradition of previous ICDARs, ICDAR 2027 will once again feature a Journal Track, combining the rapid turnaround and wide visibility of a conference with the depth, length, and rigorous peer review of an archival journal. The ICDAR–IJDAR Journal Track invites high-quality original submissions in all areas of Document Analysis and Recognition, suitable for both the International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition (ICDAR) and the International Journal on Document Analysis and Recognition (IJDAR). Accepted papers will be published in a special issue of IJDAR and will be allocated an oral presentation slot at ICDAR 2027.

Please note that journal versions of previously published conference papers, as well as survey papers, will not be considered for this special issue. Such papers should instead be submitted directly to IJDAR through its regular submission process.

Authors submitting to the journal track commit to presenting their work at ICDAR upon acceptance. Springer Nature, the publisher of IJDAR, will make accepted journal track papers freely accessible during a four-week window around the conference, in addition to their publication in the archival journal.

Format: Papers submitted to the journal track should follow the format of IJDAR submissions and all of the standard guidelines.

Procedure and deadlines:

All authors must understand that the full journal review process is required for all journal track submissions — there is no “shortcut.” Papers submitted by the journal track paper submission deadline will undergo review for the journal track. At the time of the initial journal track decision, any paper requiring major revision can no longer be considered for the journal track. In such cases, authors have two options:

  • Transfer the submitted paper to the regular IJDAR track to continue the review process.

OR

  • Withdraw the submission and prepare a shorter version to be submitted as an ICDAR conference paper. Please refer to the ICDAR 2027 website for details on deadlines and submission procedures.

Questions regarding the status of a paper under review for the IJDAR–ICDAR Journal Track should be directed to the Journal Editorial Office via the Editorial Manager system. The guest editors retain full authority to determine whether the journal review process can be completed in time, and decline submissions that arrive too late. In such cases, the authors will be notified immediately and may choose either to keep the paper in the regular IJDAR review process or to withdraw the manuscript from the journal.

Unlike the main ICDAR conference submission process, which is double blind, the IJDAR journal uses a regular submission process where authors must identify themselves on a paper at the time of submission.

Authors, reviewers, and meta-reviewers are advised that automated emails from the conference management system (CMT) may be filtered as spam; it is the responsibility of all participants to regularly check spam folders/whitelist “msr-cmt.org” and ensure such messages are received.

Important Dates

  • Journal track paper submission deadline: 15 November 2026
  • Initial journal track decision announced to authors: 15 January 2027
  • Revised journal track paper submission deadline: 1 April 2027

Conference Paper Submissions:

Authors are invited to submit full-length papers describing original work of not more than 17 pages, including figures and references. In addition to conference paper submission, there is a separate journal track at ICDAR 2027, the details of which can be found in this ICDAR-IJDAR Journal track call.

The review of conference papers will be double blind. Authors should not include their names, affiliations, or acknowledgements in submitted manuscripts, and should ensure that their identity is not revealed indirectly by citing their earlier work in the third person. Authors will be given the opportunity to respond to reviews in a rebuttal phase.

Submitted papers must adhere to the Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) format (Springer Guidelines/Templates).

CMT (Conference Management Toolkit) will be used for submission. Detailed submission instructions for authors including the submission link, can be found in the paper submission instructions.

ICDAR 2027 will present awards for best paper, best student paper, best poster paper, and best industry paper, which will be presented at the conference.

Important Notes:

Manuscripts not adhering to the page limit (maximum 17 pages all included), the formatting guidelines (Springer Lecture Notes format) or the anonymization requirements will be rejected without review.

Authors wishing to submit their manuscript to a pre-publication service (such as, for example arXiv.org) may do so. Likewise, links to GitHub websites for sharing data and code are permitted. Reviewers will be advised not to attempt to determine the identity of authors by searching for that information within online sources such as this.

The authorship of submitted manuscripts is final. No changes to the list of authors will be allowed once a paper has been submitted!

Dual submissions of manuscripts to other venues in parallel to ICDAR 2027 are prohibited!

The ICDAR 2027 Organizing Committee invites proposals for competitions focused on benchmarking models & systems that address document analysis and recognition tasks. We encourage competition proposals with a solid plan to remain active and challenging for the community beyond ICDAR 2027.

You are cordially invited to submit a proposal containing the following information:

  • Contest title and abstract (1 paragraph)
  • Organizer names and contact information
  • Summary of the organizers’ previous experience in performance evaluation and/or organizing competitions (max. 2-3 paragraphs in length)
  • Brief summary of the overall competition design, including:
    • the particular task under evaluation,
    • the data, data annotations, and metrics that will be used,
    • how the competition is novel and/or of interest to the ICDAR community,
    • the expected number of participants or methods, and
    • an outline of the competition schedule.
  • Detailed description of the experimental design and execution, including:
    • details/specifics regarding the data to be used & available annotations
    • the evaluation protocol and performance metrics, with justification using recent relevant work in the field
    • provided baseline systems and/or provided code (e.g., starter kits)
    • the platform to be used for data sharing, submission, and result verification
  • A description of how the competition will be promoted to attract participants. To attract participants, it is helpful to target competition tasks in emerging fields, or in well-established areas with open research questions.

The following will apply to accepted competitions:

  • The competition name must be standardized by starting with “ICDAR 2027” (e.g., “ICDAR 2027 Competition on …” or “ICDAR 2027 … Competition.”)
  • Competition reports will be submitted as full papers. Review criteria include:
    1. whether the competition ran according to plan,
    2. whether the competition attracted sufficient participation, and
    3. whether the report provides a clear and sufficiently detailed description of the competition execution and outcomes, including the evaluation methodology.
  • Accepted competition papers will be published in the ICDAR 2027 proceedings, and must be presented as a poster at the conference venue. Selected competitions will also have an oral presentation in a dedicated competitions session at ICDAR 2027.
  • Datasets and Evaluation Scripts:
    • Participants should not have access to the ground-truth test dataset until the end of the competition. The final/formal evaluation should be done by the organizers.
    • Datasets used in competitions must be made available very shortly after the competition concludes (e.g., after camera-ready papers are submitted), and well before the conference. Specifically, the training data and ground truth must be publicly released, and there must be a way to automatically evaluate performance on a test set. This could take the form of an evaluation server, or the test data, ground truth, and evaluation script could be made publicly available.
    • The organizers should submit any new datasets created for their competition to IAPR TC10 or TC11 for archiving.
    • Evaluation scripts must be released after the competition concludes.
