Dear TC11 members,
We have a thick newsletter issue (as is usual for September), starting with a brief report on our event of the year that has just concluded: ICDAR 2025.
In this issue, find a call for papers for the ICDAR-IJDAR journal track (of ICDAR 2026), and please pay attention to the submission guidelines for the journal track papers. Find also several important calls for conference papers, and calls for proposals for workshops, competitions and tutorials. Please check the section of dates and deadlines that may help you plan your submissions and/or trips.
A new dataset for handwritten mathematical expression recognition named “CROHME Contextual Dataset” has been recently added to our data repository.
Finally, we repost a very interesting job offer for a postdoctoral researcher in document analysis (handwriting recognition) at the CVC, Barcelona.
Happy reading!

The 19th edition of the International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition (ICDAR) has successfully concluded. ICDAR 2025 took place in Wuhan, China, between September 16–21, 2025.
ICDAR, sponsored by the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR) and guided by the TC10–TC11 technical committees of IAPR, is the flagship conference for scientists and practitioners in document analysis and recognition.
In addition to a three-day main conference, the pre-and post-conference program featured 4 value-filled tutorials, 7 excellent workshops and a doctoral consortium. Several competitions were presented in 2 parallel sessions before concluding the main conference.
A total of 314 papers were submitted to the main conference (plus 46 papers to the ICDAR–IJDAR journal track), with 40 papers accepted for oral presentation (in addition to 10 IJDAR track papers) and 102 for poster presentation.
Three keynote talks were given by leading scientists in the field: Koichi Kise, Osaka Metropolitan University, Japan; Yu Qiao, Shanghai AI Laboratory, China; and Josep Llados, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spain.
During the conference, Koichi Kise received the IAPR–ICDAR Outstanding Achievements Award of 2025. Congratulations!
ICDAR 2025 website has been updated with the conference latest news:
- All awards presented during the conference: here.
- Photos here (a treat to those who attended, and a teaser for those who have not attended so that they may attend the next ICDAR editions).
- And most importantly; the proceedings are available here, where you may also find detailed information on the conference organization committees, statistics etc.
In an outlook, ICDAR 2028 will be in Aberdeen, Scotland, 24-27 September, 2028. During this ICDAR 2025, there was a yes/no vote for that ICDAR 2028 bid and it was accepted.
Thanks to all the organizers and the participants who contributed to the success of this ICDAR, and here is to even more successful ICDAR future editions.
The IAPR technical committees on graphics recognition (TC10) and reading systems (TC11) are regularly organizing scientific events for the Document Analysis and Recognition (DAR) community, including the ICDAR flagship conference.
In addition to specific calls for bids to host one of the events, we encourage teams to announce their interest in organizing one of the following events:
- ICDAR: International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition (annually; next possibility in 2029)
- DAS: International Workshop on Document Analysis Systems (satellite event of ICDAR in even years; next possibility in 2026)
- HIP: International Workshop on Historical Document Imaging and Processing (satellite event of ICDAR; next possibility in 2026)
- GREC: International Workshop on Graphics Recognition (satellite event of ICDAR in odd years; next possibility in 2027)
- SSDA: Summer School on Document Analysis (biannually in odd years; next possibility in 2027)
You may find the details of each specific call in the previous or future issues of this newsletter or in the respective websites of each event.
Anyone interested in hosting one of these events is invited to announce their interest via email to kc.santosh@usd.edu and andreas.fischer@unifr.ch, in order to receive feedback and support for preparing a proposal.

Following the tradition of previous ICDARs, ICDAR 2026 will once again feature a Journal Track, combining the rapid turnaround and wide visibility of a conference with the depth, length, and rigorous peer review of an archival journal. The ICDAR–IJDAR Journal Track invites high-quality original submissions in all areas of Document Analysis and Recognition, suitable for both the International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition (ICDAR) and the International Journal on Document Analysis and Recognition (IJDAR). Accepted papers will be published in a special issue of IJDAR and will be allocated an oral presentation slot at ICDAR 2026.
Please note that journal versions of previously published conference papers, as well as survey papers, will not be considered for this special issue. Such papers should instead be submitted directly to IJDAR through its regular submission process.
Authors submitting to the journal track commit to presenting their work at ICDAR upon acceptance. Springer Nature, the publisher of IJDAR, will make accepted journal track papers freely accessible during a four-week window around the conference, in addition to their publication in the archival journal.
Format:
Papers submitted to the journal track should follow the format of IJDAR submissions and all of the standard guidelines.
Procedure and deadlines:
All authors must understand that the full journal review process is required for all journal track submissions—there is no “short cut”. Papers submitted by the journal track paper submission deadline will undergo review for the journal track. At the time of the initial journal track decision, any paper requiring major revision can no longer be considered for the journal track. In such cases, authors have two options:
- Transfer the submitted paper to the regular IJDAR track to continue the review process, or
- the submission and prepare a shorter version to be submitted as an ICDAR conference paper. Please refer to the ICDAR 2026 website for details on deadlines and submission procedures.
Questions regarding the status of a paper under review for the IJDAR–ICDAR Journal Track should be directed to the Journal Editorial Office via the Editorial Manager system. The guest editors retain full authority to determine whether the journal review process can be completed in time, and decline submissions that arrive too late. In such cases, the authors will be notified immediately and may choose either to keep the paper in the regular IJDAR review process or to withdraw the manuscript from the journal.
Unlike the main ICDAR conference submission process, which is double blind, the IJDAR journal uses a regular submission process where authors must identify themselves on a paper at the time of submission.
