Dear TC11 members,
This message is a little different from usual because, after two consecutive two-year terms as TC11 Communication Officer and newsletter editor, this will be my last issue.
Over these years, I have really enjoyed keeping up with what was happening across the DAR community and sharing it through the newsletter: conferences, workshops, deadlines, calls, awards, datasets, new initiatives, and many other updates from across the community. It has also been a particularly interesting period to follow, with Document AI evolving very quickly and our community evolving with it.
A newsletter, of course, depends very much on the people who send the news. So thank you to everyone who contributed announcements, reports, calls, corrections, reminders, and other material over the years. It made the job easier, and I am genuinely grateful to everyone who took the time to contribute.
I wish the new TC11 team all the best as they start this new chapter, especially at such an important moment with the merger of TC10 and TC11. I also wish the next editor good luck with the newsletters, the deadlines, the formatting, and all those announcements that somehow arrive just before an issue is supposed to go out.
This issue marks a transition in more ways than one. The new TC11 is taking shape, responsibilities are being handed over, and several updates to the website, communication channels, logo, and newsletter will follow gradually. For this issue, however, you still get the old template, the old logo, and, indeed, the old editor.
This issue also comes with quite a lot of news. Deadlines and upcoming events are back after two rather quiet issues, together with our usual open call for organizing DAR events. We also follow up on the announcement from the August issue with the full story of the TC10–TC11 merger, introduce the new TC11 on Document Analysis and Recognition and its incoming team, and report on ICDAR 2026. You will also find the calls for the ICDAR–IJDAR 2027 journal track and for ICDAR 2027.
And one final personal note: I may be biased, but I think the ICDAR/DAR community has some of the nicest people in research. I am glad to remain part of it, even if from now on I will be reading the newsletter rather than editing it.
Enjoy this issue, and happy reading!

Mickaël Coustaty (Chair, TC11)
Momina Moetesum (Vice-Chair, TC11)
Since many years, the technical committees TC10 on Graphics Recognition and TC11 on Reading Systems have co-organized scientific events because of overlapping interests, notably the International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition (ICDAR) and the Summer School on Document Analysis (SSDA).
After the ICDAR flagship conference switched to a yearly rhythm (starting with ICDAR 2024) and included traditional TC10 and TC11 events as satellite workshops (especially TC10’s GREC workshop and TC11’s DAS workshop), the collaboration between the two technical committees has become even stronger. Furthermore, with recent advances in pattern recognition and machine learning, notably in the domain of deep learning and large vision-language models, the scientific methods in graphics recognition and reading systems have converged significantly.
Overall, it has been observed that the respective research communities (TC10: around 300 members, TC11: around 1200 members) have in effect merged under the umbrella term “Document Analysis and Recognition” (DAR), as evidenced, for example, by the DAR strategy meeting in 2020: https://sites.google.com/view/darstrategy
Therefore, merging the technical committees matches the natural evolution of the research communities, and allows us to foster the joint understanding on DAR research and streamline activities, while maintaining well-established processes - in particular, the ICDAR organization with the help of its Advisory Board which will remain unchanged.
The proposal submitted to IAPR to merge the two technical committees has been approved during ICPR 2026. As a result, the new TC11 has been renamed to “TC11 on Document Analysis and Recognition”, and the “TC10 on Graphics Recognition” has been dissolved.
The next article in this newsletter discusses this transition period and announces the committee officers of the new TC11.
Formation
We are pleased to announce the formation of the new IAPR Technical Committee 11 on Document Analysis and Recognition, created by merging the former TC10 (Graphics Recognition) and former TC11 (Reading Systems).
The new TC11 officers are:
- Mickaël Coustaty - Chair (former TC11 vice-chair)
- Momina Moetesum - Vice Chair (former TC10 vice-chair)
- Anna Scius-Bertrand - Educational officer
- Brian Kenji Iwana - Communications
- Sanket Biswas - Dataset Curator
- Natalia Bottaioli - Webmaster
- Carlos Moreno-Garcia - Secretary
- Jordy Van Landeghem - Industrial Officer
The new chair, Mickaël Coustaty, shared a few words with us where he welcomed the new officers, and warmly thanked the outgoing officers of both TC10 and TC11 committees: Andreas Fischer, KC Santosh, Christophe Rigaud, Carlos Moreno, Sanket Biswas, Muzzamil Luqman, Nibal Nayef, Foteini Liwicki, and Joseph Chazalon — for their contributions.
He is looking forward to the new committee’s work spanning graphics recognition, reading systems, and more broadly document analysis and recognition. The TC11 team sees this new chapter as a shared research journey, and is looking forward to welcoming new members who want to help shape the future of Document Analysis and Recognition.
Transition
We are currently in the transition period, handing over the work, website, communication tools, etc. Along with the new name of TC11, there will be a new logo and other updates that you will see gradually in the coming newsletters.
This newsletter issue was created using what is now the old template. In the meantime, we will continue to keep you informed about upcoming events, important deadlines, and DAR news and developments.
The 20th edition of the International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition (ICDAR) has successfully concluded. ICDAR 2026 took place at TU Wien in Vienna, Austria, between August 30 and September 4, 2026, with the three-day main conference held from August 31 to September 2. The conference welcomed over 500 participants from around the world.
ICDAR, sponsored by the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR), is the premier international conference for scientists and practitioners in document analysis and recognition. Since its first edition in Saint-Malo, France, in 1991, ICDAR has served as a leading international forum covering areas such as text and handwriting recognition, layout analysis, document understanding, graphics recognition, historical documents, document forensics, digital libraries and scene-text analysis.
In addition to the three-day main conference, the pre- and post-conference program featured 4 tutorials, 8 workshops and a Doctoral Consortium. Several competitions were also organized, with 8 competition reports included in the conference proceedings and presented in a dedicated competition session.
A total of 295 valid papers were submitted to the main conference, of which 140 papers were accepted, corresponding to an acceptance rate of 47.5%. Among the accepted papers, 40 were selected for oral presentation and 100 for poster presentation. The review process involved 148 regular and 41 senior program committee members, with 817 reviews provided for the submitted papers.
In addition, 49 manuscripts were submitted to the ICDAR–IJDAR journal track, of which 12 were accepted, corresponding to an acceptance rate of 24.5%. All papers accepted through the journal track were also included as oral presentations in the conference program.
Three keynote talks were given by leading experts from academia and industry: C. V. Jawahar, IIIT Hyderabad, India, with “The Changing Landscape of Document Understanding”; Christoph Rass, Osnabrück University, Germany, with “From Archives to Algorithms and Back: What Historians Need from Document Understanding”; and Tong Sun, Adobe, USA, with “The Next Frontier: From Document Understanding to Document Agency”.
During the conference, the IAPR/ICDAR Young Investigator Award was presented to Silvia Cascianelli and Jorge Calvo-Zaragoza. Both award recipients also gave Young Investigator Award talks during the conference. Congratulations!
Several other awards were presented during the conference, including the Best Paper Award, Best Student Paper Award, Best Student Paper Runner-Up Award, Doctoral Consortium Award and Service Awards.
ICDAR 2026 online resources have been updated with information and material from the conference:
- All awards presented during the conference: ICDAR 2026 Award Ceremony
- Conference photos, including the pre- and post-conference events: ICDAR 2026 conference photos
- Detailed conference schedule and program: ICDAR 2026 Program Overview
- Conference proceedings: Springer – ICDAR 2026 Proceedings, Part I
In an outlook, the 21st edition of ICDAR will take place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from August 18–22, 2027. More information is already available on the ICDAR 2027 website. ICDAR 2028 is planned for Aberdeen, Scotland, following the bid approved at ICDAR 2025.
Thanks to all the organizers, authors, reviewers, volunteers and participants who contributed to the success of ICDAR 2026, and here is to even more successful future editions of ICDAR.
Following the tradition of previous ICDARs, ICDAR 2027 will once again feature a Journal Track, combining the rapid turnaround and wide visibility of a conference with the depth, length, and rigorous peer review of an archival journal. The ICDAR–IJDAR Journal Track invites high-quality original submissions in all areas of Document Analysis and Recognition, suitable for both the International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition (ICDAR) and the International Journal on Document Analysis and Recognition (IJDAR). Accepted papers will be published in a special issue of IJDAR and will be allocated an oral presentation slot at ICDAR 2027.
Please note that journal versions of previously published conference papers, as well as survey papers, will not be considered for this special issue. Such papers should instead be submitted directly to IJDAR through its regular submission process.
Authors submitting to the journal track commit to presenting their work at ICDAR upon acceptance. Springer Nature, the publisher of IJDAR, will make accepted journal track papers freely accessible during a four-week window around the conference, in addition to their publication in the archival journal.
Format: Papers submitted to the journal track should follow the format of IJDAR submissions and all of the standard guidelines.
Procedure and deadlines:
All authors must understand that the full journal review process is required for all journal track submissions — there is no “shortcut.” Papers submitted by the journal track paper submission deadline will undergo review for the journal track. At the time of the initial journal track decision, any paper requiring major revision can no longer be considered for the journal track. In such cases, authors have two options:
- Transfer the submitted paper to the regular IJDAR track to continue the review process.
OR
- Withdraw the submission and prepare a shorter version to be submitted as an ICDAR conference paper. Please refer to the ICDAR 2027 website for details on deadlines and submission procedures.
Questions regarding the status of a paper under review for the IJDAR–ICDAR Journal Track should be directed to the Journal Editorial Office via the Editorial Manager system. The guest editors retain full authority to determine whether the journal review process can be completed in time, and decline submissions that arrive too late. In such cases, the authors will be notified immediately and may choose either to keep the paper in the regular IJDAR review process or to withdraw the manuscript from the journal.
Unlike the main ICDAR conference submission process, which is double blind, the IJDAR journal uses a regular submission process where authors must identify themselves on a paper at the time of submission.
Authors, reviewers, and meta-reviewers are advised that automated emails from the conference management system (CMT) may be filtered as spam; it is the responsibility of all participants to regularly check spam folders/whitelist “msr-cmt.org” and ensure such messages are received.
