The Apulia region, one of the most amazing of Italy, is ready to welcome participants to ICFHR 2012 ! First of all we are happy to share with you the great honor of receiving the adhesion to ICFHR 2012 of the President of Italian Republic, Giorgio Napolitano, the Prime Minister, Mario Monti and many other institutions. The proximity of the highest Italian Institutions is a sign of attention to our work and research. The ICFHR 2012 program, is particularly rich and interesting. For the first time ICFHR is a double-track conference, in order to address the multifaceted challenging aspects of handwriting processing and recognition, in the era of the Internet. On behalf of the Organizing Committee, we are happy to announce that we received 158 evaluable submissions from researchers coming from 35 countries around the world. The program committee chairs invited 154 reviewers including both program committee members and experts for peer reviewing. All papers have been submitted for reviewing to three reviewers, at least, and we received the total amount of 439 revisions. 132 papers were accepted, of which 48 are for oral presentation and 84 are for poster presentation. The accepted papers cover several areas of online and offline handwriting preprocessing, segmentation, recognition, writer identification and verification for forensic and security issues. Motor models for writing and drawing, human reading model and psychological aspects, document and image retrieval techniques, multimedia systems, WWW applications, PDA applications etc. have also been considered. The final program consists of 16 oral sessions organized in two tracks and three poster sessions. In addition, two distinguished speakers will deliver two special lectures in the conference: Prof. Rejean Plamondon, that will present the IAPR invited lecture "Strokes Against Stroke - Stroke For Strides", and Prof. Sargur N. Srihari, that will present the IAPR invited lecture "Evaluating the Probability of Identification in the Forensic Sciences". Four competitions have been organized and results will be reported during the conference: the Competition on Recognition of On-line Mathematical Expressions, on Handwritten Document Image Binarization, on Automatic Forensic Signature Verification and on Writer Identification, for Latin/Greek Documents and Arabic Scripts. Four half-day tutorials and one full-day tutorial have also been organized for the conference. The half-day tutorials are on Information retrieval from handwritten documents, Development of HMM based Handwritten Text/Word Recognition Systems - Conception, Implementation and Evaluation, 15 Years of Handwritten Word Spotting: Achievements and Remaining Challenges, Handwriting recognition - Indic scripts. The full-day tutorial is on Signature Verification - Forensic Examiners` Perception and Solutions for Off-Line and On-Line Signatures. We hope that young researchers will seize the opportunity to participate in the tutorial to capture the most interesting aspects and challenges of the different research domains. The panel session chaired by Prof. Lambert Schomaker will stimulate discussion on new trends in the field of handwriting processing and recognition. Also the social program of the conference is being finalized and we are confident to show some of the most beautiful wonders of Apulia to conference participants. Therefore, we hope you will find your stay fruitful and rewarding. We wish you will enjoy exchange of technical and scientific ideas during the 3 days of ICFHR 2012 as well as get the flavor of the artistic and historical experience of staying in the Apulia, Italy.
