Fink, IAPR-TC11 Newsletter Editor Gernot.Fink@udo.edu ============================================================================ ========== Dates 'n' Deadlines ============================================= Event/Location/Web: Event Date: Deadline (paper submission): ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- * DAS 2010, Cambridge, MA June 9-11 December 1, 2009 (http://cubs.buffalo.edu/DAS2010/) * ICPR 2010, Istanbul August 23-26 January 15, 2010 (http://www.icpr2010.org/) * ICFHR 2010, Kolkata November 16-18 February 15, 2010 (http://www.isical.ac.in/~icfhr2010/) * ICDAR 2011, Bejing September 18-21 March 1, 2011 (http://www.icdar2011.org/) ============================================================================ ========== IJDAR Call for Papers: Special Issue ============================ Performance Evaluation of Document Analysis and Recognition Algorithms (selected papers related to ICDAR2009 competitions and GREC2009 contests) Special Issue of International Journal of Document Analysis and Recognition Guest Editors: Liu Wenyin and Ernest Valveny Aims: Performance evaluation of algorithms has become more and more important in pattern recognition in general and document analysis and recognition in particular. In such an empirical research area, more and more people are interested in those algorithms/methods/systems which are thoroughly evaluated in terms of commonly accepted performance metrics on publically accessible ground-truth data. We are happy that more and more performance evaluation work has been done for this purpose. Especially, the competitions held at the 10th international conference on document analysis and recognition (ICDAR2009) have been regarded as great successes for performance evaluation of document analysis and recognition algorithms, which had attracted nine competition categories and more than one hundred participating algorithms (methods/systems/configurations). This special Issue of IJDAR on Performance Evaluation of Document Analysis and Recognition Algorithms aims at promoting further the research and practice in this area by selecting best papers describing both the competitions and their winning algorithms, which should make clear and useful contribution (including ground-truth data, metrics, evaluation protocol, comparison with state-of-the-art methods) to performance evaluation of their specific domains. In addition, the special issue may also include other publicly submitted papers describing innovative protocols, technologies, methodologies, tools, and applications for performance evaluation of any algorithm in the area of document analysis and recognition. Hence, for this special issue, we call for papers that can present recent development on Performance Evaluation of Document Analysis and Recognition Algorithms. Topics: In this special issue, in addition to those papers extended from the ICDAR2009 competition papers and their winning papers, we also call for original papers related to Performance Evaluation of Document Analysis and Recognition Algorithms. Areas of interests include, but not limited to: * Performance evaluation protocols; * Performance metrics * Evaluation methodologies * Ground truthing tools and ground truth databases; * Large scale performance comparison of algorithms * Applications. Submission Each paper for submission should be formatted in double spacing, single column of no more than 20 pages in length. A separate cover letter should be submitted that includes the paper title, the list of all authors and their affiliations, and information of the contact author. Each paper will be reviewed rigorously, and possibly in two rounds, i.e., minor/major revisions will undergo another round of review. Prospective authors are invited to submit papers via the online submission system at http://ijda.edmgr.com/ before Nov. 16, 2009. Please select the special issue type and indicate this special issue on the cover page. Late submission will not be processed. Schedule Deadline for paper submission: Nov 16, 2009 Completion of first review: Feb 08, 2010 Minor/Major revision due (first round): Mar 22, 2010 Completion of second round of reviews: Apr 19, 2010 Minor revision due (second round): May 17, 2010 Final decision notification: Jun 07, 2010 Publication materials due: Jun 21, 2010 Publication date: Sep/Dec, 2010 Guest Editors Liu Wenyin Ernest Valveny Department of Computer Science Centre de Visio' per Computador City University of Hong Kong Universitat Auto'noma de Barcelona Hong Kong 08193 - Bellaterra - Cerdanyola (Barcelona), Spain Tel: +852-27844730 Tel: +34-935811828 Fax: +852-2788614 Fax: +34-935811670 Email: csliuwy@cityu.edu.hk mail: ernest.valveny@cvc.uab.cat ============================================================================ ========== ICPR 2010: Call for Workshops =================================== ICPR 2010 - Call for Workshops http://www.icpr2010.org The ICPR 2010 Workshop Chairs invite workshop proposals for the 20th IAPR International Conference on Pattern Recognition (ICPR 2010) that will be held in Istanbul, Turkey during August 23-26, 2010. The workshops will be held immediately before the start of the main conference. The workshops must be full-day. The ICPR 2010 workshops will provide an informal setting where workshop participants will have the opportunity to discuss technical topics in an atmosphere that fosters an active exchange of ideas. Members from all segments of the pattern recognition community are invited to submit workshop proposals for review. The topics of the workshops should be such that the workshops do not divert papers from the main conference. Each proposal will be assessed for its scientific content, proposed structure and overall relevance. Workshop organizers will be responsible for inviting speakers and ensuring their participation, submission and review of papers, and structuring and leading the discussion sessions. Each workshop organizing committee will be responsible for producing a Call for Papers by January 15, 2010. /Submission Requirements:/ The proposal should provide the following information: 1. A brief description of the workshop, specifying the goals and the technical issues that will be addressed. 2. A brief discussion of why and to whom the workshop is of interest. 3. The names, postal addresses, phone and fax numbers, email addresses and short biographies of the proposed workshop organizing committee. This committee should consist of at least three people who are experts in the technical area. 4. The name of the primary contact person for the organizing committee. 5. This logo should firstly show a modern design suitable for representing an association of professional scientists and engineers working at the forefront of research and development. Secondly, it would be highly desirable that the logo could be easily associated with professionals working in the area of Reading Systems by, e.g., incorporating - potentially abstract - references to typical objects or attributes of our profession (as achieved nicely in the logo of the IEEE Signal Processing Society). Though the logo's primary use will be on the web site of TC11 the design should also be suitable for use in print publications. Please send design proposals for the new TC11 logo before December 31, 2009 to the TC11 Chair Daniel P. Lopresti (lopresti@cse.lehigh.edu) in a suitable digital format (bitmap[s] with resolutions appropriate for web and print publications, PDF, or a commonly used vector graphics format). The TC11 Leadership Team will then review the received logo proposals and select a winning proposal. The TC11 Leadership Team reserves the right to extend the deadline and/or discontinue the contest if no suitable logo is submitted within the indicated time frame. The creator of the winning proposal will be receiving an award consisting of a certificate and a small cash prize. NOTE: By making a design proposal the proposer certifies that the proposed logo is his/her own work and does not violate intellectual property rights or copyrights of some third party. Furthermore she/he explicitly accepts that the logo design thereafter becomes the sole property of TC11 and that the only compensation to the creator of the design will be the award presented by TC11 and the recognition of his/her achievement by the wider community. ============================================================================ ========== Job Opportunities (Repost) ====================================== The Pattern Recognition and Document Analysis group at the Computer Vision Centre (www.cvc.uab.es), Barcelona, Spain, offers one postdoctoral research position in the area of Document Image Analysis.
