For me it is a great honor to serve on the newly established TC11 Leadership Team together with my colleagues Dan Lopresti, Koichi Kise, Masakazu Iwamura, and Dimosthenis Karatzas. In my position I will first of all strive for bringing to you the news relevant to the field of reading systems - a task for which I also need your help and hope to see many contributions from the community (see also the "Call for Contributions" below). Secondly, I will work towards improving the "look and feel" of the newsletter itself, which still comes in a rather oldfashioned ASCII format. Finally, also the content categories present in the newsletter could be revised or extended. In this newsletter you will find an example of a (brief) conference report on - or rather some impressions from - ICDAR 2009. It was written by myself, but I would love to include reports on other events by contributers from the community in the future. I also added a new content category that I want to become a permanent one: Dates 'n' Deadlines. Here you will find a brief list of upcoming events ordered by paper submission deadline, so you will always know where to submit your most exiting current research papers ;-) However, in the end this is *your* newsletter and I can only hope that you enjoy reading it or find it useful. Therefore, I would be very grateful to hear your comments or suggestions for making this newsletter a succesful provider of up-to-date information to the TC11 community. Best regards, Gernot A. Fink, IAPR-TC11 Newsletter Editor Gernot.Fink@udo.edu ============================================================================ ========== Dates 'n' Deadlines ============================================= Event/Location/Web: Event Date: Deadline (paper submission): ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- * SAC 2010, Switzerland March 22-26 September 8, 2009!!! Therefore, please contribute relevant news by sending a short notice to the newsletter editor Gernot A. Fink . Such news could be the obvious announcements of confereces and workshops, job opportunities, reports on past conferences, book reviews, or anything that might be of interest to a wider audience involved in the construction of reading systems. ============================================================================ ========== Conference Reports ============================================== ---------- Impressions from ICDAR 2009, Barcelona ------ (by Gernot A. Fink) * Quick Facts: Venue: Campus Hotel of Universitat Auto`noma de Barcelona (UAB) (approx. 30 Min north east of the city of Barcelona) Organization: Great job by the CVC team of UAB, General Chair: Josep Llado's Statistics: 430 submitted papers, 64% acceptance rate, approx. 370 participants, 30-35 degrees Celsius during the day Format: 5 invited lectures (inkl. award lecture by Horst Bunke), 3 parallel oral sessions, 3 poster sessions, 1 panel session, 1 competitions session (reporting on results of 9! competitions) Social/Community building program: - nice welcome reception (at the Campus Hotel) incl. folk performances - great evening programm in the area of Barcelona's old port (including harbour boat cruise) cumulating in the conference dinner * Observations - Scientifically the field demonstrated progress in various directions. However, no radically changed paradigms or surprisingly new methods were presented. - Participants (including panelists) unanimously agreed on the importance of building large, standardized data sets (and associated benchmarks). - As posters attracted substantial attention and a large audience, future ICDAR conferences should reserve more (presentation) space for posters. * Next ICDAR conferences: - ICDAR 2011, Bejing, September 18-21 - ICDAR 2013, Washington (bid by Dave Doermann and colleagues approved by the attendants of ICDAR 2009 in Barcelona, congratulations!) ============================================================================ ========== Calls for Papers ================================================ ### ##### ###### # ###### ##### ### # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # ## ## # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # ###### ##### # # # # # # # # ####### # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # ### ##### ###### # # # # ####### ### ##### ##### 11th International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition China National Convention Center, Beiing, China September 18-21, 2011 http://www.icdar2011.org Call for papers We are pleased to announce that the Eleventh International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition (ICDAR 2011), sponsored by the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR) TC-10 (Graphics Recognition) and TC-11 (Reading Systems), will be held at CHINA NATIONAL CONVENTION CENTER, Beijing, China during September 18-21, 2011.
