[] Dear TC-11 researcher, I hope every ICDAR delegate has returned home safely. I've heard many bizarre tales on return journeys, including the stories of those who were not able to attend the conference, due to the difficult travel conditions of this ominous and sad week. Many minor problems are put into perspective when confronted with the current real-world events. I would like to thank the ICDAR organizers and programme committee for all the work they have realised. Below are a number of current issues within our own community to which I would like to draw your attention 1* Conferences 2* Results of the Joint TC10/TC11 meeting 3* Advisory Board for ICDAR'2003 4* ICDAR'2005 host has been found 5* TC-11 list, now hosted by Majordomo software --------------------------------------------------------------------- 1* Conferences The conference agenda can be found on http://www.ai.rug.nl/iapr/tc-11/conf/current-conference-agenda.html Some of the relevant conferences are: 2002 Aug. 6-8 ... IWFHR-8, Niagara on the Lake, Ontario, Canada 2002 Aug. ....... DAS'02, Princeton USA 2002 Aug. 11-15.. ICPR'2002 Quebec City, Canada 2003 Aug. 3-6 ... ICDAR'2003 Edinburgh, Scotland 2005 ............ ICDAR'2005 Seoul, South Korea --------------------------------------------------------------------- 2* Results of the Joint TC10/TC11 meeting - Prof. Guy Lorette has accepted membership in the Advisory Board of the international UNIPEN Foundation (iUF), following up the late prof. J.-C. Simon. Merci beaucoup, Guy! - in order to guarantee continuity and the transfer of organisational knowledge, prof. Kwon and I have proposed that the ICDAR - a document-oriented research platform - will be accompanied by an actual document describing a framework and concrete regulations with respect to requirements of hosting and organisational details. Rationale: the Romans disappeared, but the written Roman law remained. One could also say 'scripta manent': Documents are a good way of communicating the ICDAR 'mores' and 'culture' to coming generations. Several persons have volunteered to cooperate on the joint editing of this document. - a new committee has been formed, the "ICDAR Advisory Board", consisting of the TC-10 and TC-11 chairmen and a third member who has acted as ICDAR host in the past. A current ICDAR organizing committee will report to this body regularly. - powerpoint slides, presented at the joint TC-10/TC-11 meeting can be found at: http://www.ai.rug.nl/iapr/tc-11/newsletters/ (bottom) - There was ample room for more attendants at this meeting. Please remember that the joint TC-10/11 meetings at ICDARs are open, and use can be made of your democratic rights, in order to make your voice heard. --------------------------------------------------------------------- 3* Advisory Board for ICDAR'2003 Apart from the two TC-chairs, prof. Kwon (TC-10) and prof. Schomaker (TC-11), who are member by default, there was a vacancy for a senior member of the newly installed Advisory Board for ICDAR conferences. Prof. Andreas Dengel has kindly accepted this position on the Advisory Board for ICDAR'2003, for which I would like to warmly thank him. His experience in ICDAR is highly welcomed. --------------------------------------------------------------------- 4* The ICDAR'2005 host has been identified In Seattle, at the ICDAR'2001, it became clear that Korea will be the host of the ICDAR'2005 conference. I would like to thank profs. J.H. Kim and S.W. Lee for their proposal to host this conference, in the beautiful city of Seoul. As a small remark, I would like to invite everybody in the community to consider hosting ICDAR when their continent comes into play in the future, such that we can have exciting host elections, as we did experience in the past. The requirements for hosting will be made explicit in the "ICDAR hosting and organisation" document, which is under development. There exists no doubt whatsoever, that the team at KAIST/Korea will be extremely well equipped to deal with the demanding but also rewarding task of organizing an ICDAR conference. --------------------------------------------------------------------- 5* Your TC-11 membership is intrinsically tied to being subscribed to the tc-11@ai.rug.nl email list. Please do not hesitate to point out to your junior researchers that membership of TC-11 is an important step towards their integration into our scientific community. Instructions: To control the list-server software (Majordomo), please send an email containing a single line with a command to majordomo@ai.rug.nl Examples: Command: Explanation: ------------------------------------------------------------ help (information on majordomo is emailed) subscribe tc-11 (request to become a tc-11 member) unsubscribe tc-11 (to give up your membership) --------------------------------------------------------------------- This concludes the current TC-11 Newsletter.
